Stormy Convict Lake Wedding

Some places always take my breath away. I mean, have you seen the majestic regions of eastern California? The Eastern Sierra is full of splendor. From the epic mountain ranges to the rolling sagebrush hills, clear alpine lakes to steamy hot springs—there’s always something to ignite your sense of wonder.

There's a beautiful view to behold everywhere you go in the Eastern Sierra. One of the areas I adore for all of its natural glory is Mammoth Lakes. This town is fairly remote. Nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, this area is at least 5 hours from the nearest airport. Naturally, this attracts a lot of outdoorsy and adventurous people. The kinds of folks who crave long and winding roads, crazy weather, and high elevations. People like Caro and Toni.

A Windy Mammoth Lakes Elopement

We met up with Caro and Toni on a rather warm day in Big Pine. The forecast called for a heat dome, which is when the heat and humidity are so high that it makes it difficult for people to sweat effectively. On days like these, it’s important to stay hydrated and cool. But, believe it or not, it was one of those days where every place we visited felt like a different climate.

As an outdoor wedding and elopement photographer, I love when couples put so much care and attention into the smallest parts of the day. So I started by capturing the amazing details and intimate moments at Caro and Toni’s Airbnb. The lighting was lovely, making every photo pop. There was a bit of scrambling, as friends and family prepped for the big day. But I was able to pull the couple away—once for a first look, and another for a very cute moment between Toni & Caro’s kid.

Isiah (the officiant) and I (the photographer) traveled with the couple and their family to Convict Lake. There, we were greeted with crazy strong winds. But that didn’t stop these two and their guests from enjoying the allure of this alpine lake. Under the shadow of Mount Morrison, these two held a short and sweet ceremony, complete with a poem by Emily Dickens and a land acknowledgment for the Paiute (Nuumu), Shoshone (Newe), and Timbisha peoples. Our couple swapped rings, kissed, and got a big cheer from their guests.

After many joyous moments with their family, the couple traveled to the valley for their private vows. I’ve always been such a fan of private vows—they allow you the space to fully express yourself, and maybe shed a few tears.

After a quick champagne pop and some quiet moments enjoying the scenery, we headed to our second-to-last spot for the day. We were quickly greeted by big rain droplets. The rain was thick and hard but it was lovely too. The light coming from under the clouds cast the most beautiful glow, and we even got a rainbow out of it! Perfect for an LGBT wedding in June.

Caro and Toni ended the night with a home-cooked dinner, cake, speeches, and dancing. What a stupendous way to spend a wedding day—full of family, friends, and loving intentions.

Wedding Tips for Your Convict Lake Wedding

Interested in your own Convict Lake wedding?

Before you go, take note of these Convict Lake wedding tips:

  • Convict Lake is busy, as it’s easily accessible and a popular spot for fishing. Opt for weekdays in the spring and fall to reduce crowd size.

  • Be mindful of the elevation. The Eastern Sierra is at a higher elevation, which can leave you susceptible to dehydration and exhaustion. Drink lots of water and consider coming early to acclimate. Don’t over-exert yourself or your guests.

  • Book an elopement wedding photographer to help you plan and capture the day. I am intimately familiar with Mammoth Lakes as I have been traveling here since 2017. Contact me and I’ll help you have the most amazing wedding day.

  • Book lodging and other vendors, such as an officiant, florals, decor, food, and more.

  • Get married. Celebrate your love in this magical place!

Meet Your Convict Lake Wedding Photographer

I'm Diana Lustig, a California-born adventurer with a camera for a hand and an inborn love for the outdoors. I'm a professional photographer of 15 years and counting. In my free time, you'll find me traveling through Eastern California with my husband in our van, Clyde.

How did I get into wedding and elopement photography? In 2019, I hired adventure photographers for my own wedding and they showed me there’s a different, more personal way to get married. It was such a special day, I want to bring it to so many more couples who believe in getting married their own way.
